When you have carpets in your home, it is especially important to pay attention to the use of the right vacuum cleaner. But what makes a vacuum cleaner suitable for carpets? In any case, it should be equipped with a motorized floor brush!

We test every vacuum cleaner on carpets, including the Miele Boost CX1, which is currently the top performer on carpets. Prefer a stick vacuum? Then the Dyson V15 Detect is a good option.

More information about vacuum cleaners for carpet

Almost everyone has a carpet on the floor. What many people don't know is that a carpet can become very dirty very quickly. A vacuum cleaner with low suction power or the wrong attachment is often unable to clean the dirt thoroughly. This can become a big problem for people with allergies.

Carpet is a broad concept: there are dozens of types of carpets. Here are some common materials that carpets can be made of:

What to look for in a vacuum for carpets

When choosing a vacuum cleaner, it is incredibly important to consider certain characteristics. The most important aspect is that the vacuum cleaner must be equipped with a motorized floor brush. This makes it easy to remove pet hair. Fun fact: many of the best vacuum cleaners for carpets mentioned above are also featured in research on the best vacuum cleaner for pet hair!

But that's not the only thing to consider. The vacuum cleaner should also have adjustable suction power so that it doesn't create a vacuum effect on your carpet, constantly pulling it up as you vacuum!

Finally, it's crucial to pay close attention to whether you have wooden floors as well. In such cases, you'll want a vacuum cleaner with a combination brush or a separate parquet brush.

How do I research the best vacuum cleaner for carpet

To be able to label a vacuum cleaner as the best choice for carpet, I do thorough vacuum cleaner reviews. We have set up a vacuum cleaner test center at Vacuumtester.com, where we test vacuum cleaners on various floor types with our own floor trays. Two of these floor types have soft floors: long-pile carpet and low-pile carpet.

However, I am not there yet with only the suction performance on carpet: I also test the suction power with the help of a vacuum tester and the Airflow with an air speed meter. I also test the floor brush on soft floor types: can it move easily? Is the dirt pushed forward instead of sucked in?

However, I am not there yet with only the suction performance on carpet: I also test the suction power with the help of a vacuum tester and the Airflow with an air speed meter.

To make the research reliable and valuable, I always adhere to the following rules:

How was the ranking determined?

When comparing vacuums for carpets, we pay special attention to a few key features. First off, adjustable suction power is crucial. Carpets come in various types and thicknesses, so being able to adjust the vacuum's suction power helps ensure optimal cleaning performance for different carpet styles.

We also consider the weight of the vacuum. A lightweight model is a godsend, especially when cleaning large carpeted areas or moving the vacuum up and down stairs. It's all about making your cleaning tasks less of a workout and more of a breeze.

A good filter is another must-have. It's not just about picking up dirt from your carpet, but also ensuring that dust and allergens don't get blown back into your home's air.

Lastly, we look at the vacuum's brushes, specifically motorized ones. These powered brushes can agitate carpet fibers, helping to dislodge and suck up stubborn dirt and pet hair that might be hiding deep within your carpet. In short, we're here to make sure you get a vacuum that's a true carpet cleaning champ.

What I would like to point out

Always use a motorized floor brush when vacuuming carpets. This allows the vacuum cleaner to penetrate much deeper into the carpet than with other floor brushes. Do you also have hardwood floors in your home? After vacuuming the carpet, be sure to switch to a different floor brush. This will help prevent scratches, but not only that: if, for example, you are vacuuming cat litter, this type of floor brush will prevent it from being pushed forward.

Why a study on vacuum cleaners for carpets?

Research into the suction performance of vacuum cleaners on carpets is very important in my opinion. Almost everyone has a carpet or rug in their home. A carpet can turn into a source of allergens if not maintained properly.

Buying a vacuum cleaner with low suction or without a brush that is suitable for carpets will make cleaning the carpet impossible. I also emphasized this in my guide to vacuuming a carpet.

By researching the performance on carpets, I can help you make the best choice.

Different vacuum cleaners for carpets

I just mentioned that at Vacuumtester.com we test different types of vacuum cleaners. From small handheld vacuums to large vacuum cleaners on wheels. Each type of vacuum cleaner has its own advantages and disadvantages.

If we look at vacuuming carpets, then you have to take into account with a canister vacuum that it has to be dragged over the carpet. Larger rubber wheels are very important, as small wheels can quickly get stuck.

A cordless stick vacuum often has a lower suction power, unless it is equipped with a turbo mode. With such a turbo mode, it is easy to vacuum carpets, but keep in mind that such a vacuum cleaner only lasts a few minutes.

  1. Is the Miele Boost CX1 a new vacuum or like a model that will be out of date quickly? I once bought an Dyson v6 and JUST when I bought it it was renewed. Don't want to end up like that again.

  2. That's a very thoughtful consideration, and it's great that you're checking with me. The Miele Boost CX1 is a relatively new model. Miele may make incremental improvements over time; for example, after 2 years, the Miele HX1 – a stick vacuum – became the HX2. These developments are usually minimal, so you don't need to worry in the coming years. Plus, Miele is known for its excellent quality and long lifespan! 🙂
