Reusable Roomba Bags: All You Need to Know

In short: the vacuum cleaner bags that come standard with a Roomba are not reusable. However, there are reusable Roomba bags that you can easily empty above the trash can, after which you can use it again in the charging station. View a wide range here.

Many iRobot Roomba robot vacuum cleaners are now able to empty themselves automatically. If the dust container of the robot vacuum cleaner is full, the Roomba will automatically return to its base, after which it will be emptied automatically.

The dirt is then collected in the charging station, which is equipped with a bag. When this bag is full, you must replace it with a new one. Or are there also possibilities to reuse Roomba bags?

No, Roomba bags are not reusable

Let me start with the bad news right away: the bags that come standard with the Roomba are unfortunately not reusable. If the bags are full, you must replace them with a new one. During the iRobot Roomba J7+ review, I discovered that you get extra Roomba bags with your robot vacuum cleaner. Are these bags gone? Then you will have to buy a new one.

Why are the bags not reusable?

Just as you cannot reuse a vacuum cleaner bag from a normal vacuum cleaner, that is unfortunately also the case with a Roomba bag. And that's not for nothing: a vacuum cleaner bag works a bit the same as a HEPA filter. You want to prevent dust from escaping from the vacuum cleaner bag when the Roomba is emptied.

Possible problems if you are going to reuse non-reusable Roomba bags:

  • Increased dust emissions, with an increased risk of allergic reactions
  • Bags damage and leak, causing dust to enter the charging base
  • The robot vacuum cleaner can eventually be emptied less well

The big advantage of vacuum cleaner bags

Let's take a quick look at the advantage of a vacuum cleaner bag. I myself am in favor of vacuum cleaners that are equipped with a bag. This gives you the following advantages:

  • Vacuum cleaner stays cleaner
  • No high dust emissions (so less chance of allergic reactions)
  • Easier emptying, you just throw the full bag of dirt into the waste container

Don't: Empty Roomba bags with a vacuum cleaner

Now you may think: I empty the vacuum cleaner bag and then I can use it again. This is therefore not recommended: the current Roomba bags wear out, which can lead to increased dust emissions in the long run.

Although you may now think that you can easily empty the bags with a vacuum cleaner, the opposite is true. You can damage the bags and they can even break.
