When you buy a new robot vacuum cleaner, it is very important to pay attention to the maximum threshold height. In other words: the maximum height of the thresholds that a robot vacuum cleaner can drive over.

Are you planning to buy a Roomba and do you have thresholds in the home? So pay attention, because when the thresholds are too high, the Roomba cannot navigate to other rooms. In this article I will tell you if a Roomba can drive over thresholds and if so, what the maximum threshold height is for the different models.

Roomba robot vacuum cleaners can drive over thresholds

Let me start with the good news right away: Roomba robot vacuum cleaners are able to drive over thresholds! This allows them to navigate from room to room, provided the thresholds are not too high, of course.

Handy and necessary: because if we look at the iRobot Roomba i3 EVO review or the new iRobot Roomba J7+ review, for example, the robot vacuum cleaner creates a virtual map of the home. Something that is of course only possible if the Roomba can drive from room to room.

Maximum threshold height for a Roomba

Although Roomba robot vacuum cleaners can drive over thresholds, there is a maximum threshold height. iRobot reports1What is the maximum height of a threshold that a Roomba can transition over?, homesupport.irobot.com the following: “The maximum height of a threshold that all Roomba models can transition over, when performing a cleaning cycle, is ⅝ in (1.6cm)“. Is a threshold higher? Then the Roomba can't drive over it.

My advice: measure thresholds in your home

I strongly advise you to measure the thresholds in your home. Avoid purchasing an expensive – because yes, they are quickly several hundred euros – iRobot Roomba that cannot navigate from room to room due to high thresholds in your home.

So are your thresholds lower than 1.6 centimeters? Then you can assume that the Roomba can drive over this without any problems!
